Event Data Recorders — New Jersey

Event Data Recorder New Jersey expert witnesses provide imaging and retrieval of data recorded by modules (i.e., black boxes, accident data recorders) in vehicles (automobiles, buses, trucks, ambulances, fire trucks), planes, ships, trains, and equipment, as well as interpretation and evaluation of the data retrieved.

These experts, also referred to as Crash Data Retrieval specialists, listed in this directory, may provide analysis and opinions on various data elements recorded and the performance of such on-board memory devices, and their compliance with recorder standards, in particular the US federal standards (NHTSA 49 CFR Part 563 and US 49/563.5) and the IEEE 1616 Motor Vehicle Event Data Recorder (MVEDR) standard.

Crash Data Retrieval experts may specialize in specific types of EDR data access methods and types of modules, such as the Bosch CR tool and tools for downloading data from airbag modules.

These experts may also interpret the recorded data and render opinions as to various vehicle conditions before an accident, fire or other event, such as engine problems or sudden changes in wheel speed. In systems with collision warning radar, these experts may also provide opinions on the turn rate, and the position and speeds of other vehicles before a collision.

These EDR experts may also provide opinions on privacy issues and the usage of  data from black boxes without the vehicle owner’s consent.

As of 2016, fourteen U.S. states provide privacy restrictions for access to EDR data
