Psychiatric Nursing United States expert witnesses provide opinions on the care and treatment of mental health and substance abuse patients in public and private outpatient and hospital settings, including issues in patient assessments, coordinating care and assisting in treatment plans. These nursing experts may opine on state nursing practice acts, institutional policies and procedures and psychiatric nursing standards of care.
These Psychiatric-Mental Health (PMH) registered nurses (RN) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) may provide written opinions on standards in issues of patient seclusion and restraint, the right of patients to refuse treatment (eg: right to refuse medication), responsibilities for maintaining the confidentiality of patient information with treatment teams and within medical records, privileged communications and informed consent. These experts may also opine on nursing standards and mandated reporting of suspected child and elder abuse and neglect, the duty to protect third parties from foreseeable harm, patient supervision and the treatment of minors.
