Sanford M. Silverman, MD, is the medical director of Coastal Pain Medicine in Pompano Beach, FL and the CEO of Silver Lining Medical Consultants.   He is board certified in anesthesiology, with added qualifications in Pain Management from the American Board of Anesthesiology and a Diplomate in Pain Medicine from the American Board of Pain Medicine.  He is also a Diplomate in Addiction Medicine from the American Board of Addiction Medicine.  His practice consists of interventional and medical treatment of chronic pain, the treatment of various addictive disorders, and currently has an interest in treating complex chronic pain, addiction, and hyperalgesia.

 

After receiving his bachelor and master degrees in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, Dr. Silverman earned his medical degree from New York Medical College. He then entered active duty military service with the US Army and completed a transitional internship at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, California. He then completed a residency in anesthesiology at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. 

After completing his training, he served as Major, US Army and Chief of the Anesthesia and Operative Service at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas where he also was also the director of the pain clinic. He was also Assistant Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, El Paso, Texas.  

 

The author of articles and letters in publications such as Anesthesiology, the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, the Canadian Journal of Anesthesiology, and Pain Physician. Dr. Silverman has also lectured nationally on topics including interventional pain management, controlled substance management and addiction issues, prescription drug abuse, and in forensic medicine. In 2016, he co-authored a text book titled: Controlled Substance Management in Chronic Pain; A Balanced Approach.

 

Dr. Silverman has been the director of the Controlled Substance Management course, for the American Society of Interventional Physicians (ASIPP) which is a core requirement for board certification in Interventional Pain Medicine. He is also the director of the Safe Opioid Prescribing Course for the Florida Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (FSIPP). Dr. Silverman also served on the United Way of Broward County, Commission on Substance Abuse, Board of Governors, 9/13/2010 – 12/2016

 

Dr. Silverman is section editor; controlled substances for the journal, Pain Physician, and a contributing author to Official Disability Guidelines, widely utilized in the Workers Compensation system.

Dr. Silverman is the past- president the Broward County Medical Association (BCMA) and serves on the Board of Trustees as well. He is the past president of FSIPP, is a board member of ASIPP and of FSIPP.  His other memberships include American Society of Addiction Medicine, Florida Society of Addiction Medicine, and the Florida Medical Association.

 

Dr. Silverman is also an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Clinical Biomedical Science, Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University,  Boca Raton, FL., Clinical assistant professor of Anesthesiology in the dept. of surgery at NOVA Southeastern University school of Osteopathic Medicine, and   Voluntary Assistant Professor Medicine at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, and Affiliate Assistant Professor of Clinical Biomedical Science, and Clinical Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Nova Southeastern University College of Allopathic Medicine, March 1, 2017-pres.

 

Dr. Silverman also served on the Broward County Commission's Pain Clinic Task Force established to determine feasibility of moratoriums on pain clinics in the county and the creation of countywide ordinance to regulate them. In addition, he served on the stakeholder committee of the CDC Opioid Guidelines, representing ASIPP.
