DANIEL J. SHAPIRO - Since 2004 Dan has pursued business consulting activities predominantly, but not exclusively, related to the scrap metal recycling industry building on his over 47 years of experience in both family-owned and corporate entities.  He has worked with many scrap companies around the country and Canada to coordinate and install significant equipment installations and deal with management issues across a broad range of topics including systems, software, accounting procedures, equipment selection and installation, etc. He has also developed and marketed tools to increase the efficiency of operations and a metrics based incentive pay program to enhance employee performance at all levels within a company. In addition, he has facilitated implementation activities for companies utilizing management systems, such as the Recycling Industry Operating Standard (RIOS) and Responsible Recycling for Electronics (R2), to effectively manage their operations, environmental compliance and health and safety issues. He has also been engaged on numerous occasions as an expert witness in cases related to the scrap metal recycling industry.

  • Assumed increased marketing duties with consumers and national brokers for all products.

Selected accomplishments included:

  • Increased processed and shipped ferrous scrap levels by 400% within two years.
  • Worked with OEM's within the scrap processing industry to update equipment to state of the art levels while maintaining profitability.
  • Successfully negotiated five separate collective bargaining agreements each with the International Longshoremen's Association and the Teamsters with no work stoppages.
  • Reduced the overall cost of the trucking department by 25%.
  • Negotiated renewals of lending agreements with all banks at below prime rates.

Employed by Azcon Corporation in various capacities.  Designed, contracted and managed modifications to automobile shredder achieving 200% increase in productivity.  Managed Alton, Illinois facility for two years.  Coordinated inter-plant movements of raw and processed materials between three St. Louis area facilities.  Assisted in contract negotiations and all regulatory activities.
