Chairman

Ella Cheong has been involved in intellectual property practice for more than 35 years. She is a solicitor in Hong Kong and is also qualified to practice in Singapore, the United Kingdom and Australia. She had been for many years precedent partner at one of Hong Kong's oldest law firms, having established its intellectual property department which consistently received top ranking in international surveys, and also established, at the invitation of the Singapore Government, a leading intellectual property boutique firm in Singapore now known as Ella Cheong Spruson & Ferguson.

Ella's accomplishments include having been a member of the Patens Steering Committee Chairman of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Law Society of Hong Kong for many years. She is now on the Roil of Honour of the Law society of Hong Kong. She was also President of the Hong Kong Group of Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA) and is a Life Founder Member of Asian Anti-Counterfeit Association (AAA). She has served as a member of the Board of Directors of International Trademarks Association) (INTA), and has participated in many of INTA's committees. She is Chairman of the group comprising independent members of the Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriete Industrielle (AIPPI) from around the world, representing them on the Council of Presidents and the Executive Committee of AIPPI, and received its Award of Merit. She was a Council Member of the Federation Internationale des Conseils en Propriete Industrielle (FICPI), and has now been elected a Member of Honour of FICPI.

She has been involved in both contentious and non-contentious aspects of all IP issues both in Hong Kong and China.

Ella has featured in numerous publications (including "Who's Who in the World", "Who's Who of Professionals" and various other "Who's Who" such as Trademark Lawyers, Patent Lawyers, Business Lawyers) as a leading professional and practitioner in each and every aspect of IP and was listed as one of the world's top 20 trade mark law practitioners in "The Best of the Best". Coral Toh
Director

Coral Toh has been a director of Ella Cheong (Hong Kong and Beijing) since 2005. Prior to that, she has worked at several leading intellectual property law firms and has been involved in both contentious and non-contentious aspects of intellectual property law practice.

Her experience in contentious intellectual property matters includes advising multinational companies on anti-counterfeiting strategies in the region, coordinating private investigations across jurisdictions, obtaining search warrants, liaising with local police, customs or administrative authorities, conducting raids on infringers' premises, negotiating settlement terms between infringers and intellectual property owners, obtaining and enforcing interim injunctions and final orders for delivery up or destruction. She has also advised on, filed or defended trademark opposition, revocation and invalidation actions in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Malaysia.

Her experience in non-contentious intellectual property matters focuses on intellectual property acquisition and exploitation and includes drafting and reviewing of non-disclosure agreements, memorandums of understanding, research collaboration agreements, joint-venture agreements, clinical trial agreements, software development agreements, technology transfer and patent licensing agreements and other licensing and franchising agreements with subject matters ranging from global tracking systems, computer games, manufacture, sale and provision of goods and services to merchandizing relating to television series and movies. She has also advised multinational companies on general due diligence procedures with respect to the acquisition of intellectual property on a regional basis.

Coral has assisted in the incorporation of both public and private companies, as well as the corporate restructuring by the Singapore National Science and Technology Board of its mature research institutes such as the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Institute of Molecular Agrobiology, Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, Institute of Microelectronics, Institute of High Performance Computing, Gintic Institute of Manufacturing Technology, Data Storage Institute, Environmental Technology Institute and Kent Ridge Digital Labs. Prior to that, she assisted in negotiating and drafting collaborative agreements between governmental research institutes (including their subsidiaries and spin-off companies), Singapore's 2 universities (National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University) and foreign governmental, academic and industry partners. The subject matter of these agreements ranged from materials engineering for handheld devices to software development, electronic scanning equipment and educational materials.

Coral has worked in Singapore and Hong Kong and her working languages are English and Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien and Teochew).

Wubin Yan
Director

Wubin was appointed as Director in January 2008.

Wubin earned a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Beijing Technology & Business University in 1997 and received a Masters in Economic Jurisprudence from China University of Political Science and Law in 2001. She qualified as a patent attorney in 2000 and as an Attorney-at-Law in 2002.

Wubin has had over 9 years' of experience in intellectual property matters. She began her career as a trademark and patent agent, specializing in intellectual property litigation before rising to managerial positions in 2 leading intellectual property firms in China.

During her years of intellectual property practice, she was involved in all aspects of intellectual property, in patents, trademarks, copyright, domain name disputes and unfair competition in China. This includes patent and trademark prosecution, opposition, invalidation, infringement, as well as raid actions. Her clients included multinational corporations with famous brands in the food & beverage, apparel, haute couture and pharmaceutical industries.

Wubin is a member of the Chinese Bar and the All-China Patent Agents Association as well as the Chinese Intellectual Property Society.

James C. Schroeder

James Schroeder is registered as a member of the Washington State Bar and is also registered to practise before the USPTO. He undertook coursework at Mansfield College, Oxford University, U.K., before receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 1990 and his Juris Doctorate from Willamette University, College of Law, Salem, in 1996. His legal coursework included studies in 1995 at the East China University of Politics and Law in Shanghai.

Since 1998, he has worked both in industry and the private sector, and the technologies included not only the biotech field but also semiconductor patent prosecution for AMD as well as bioinformatics, software, data networking, multimedia and consumer electronics patents for Silicon Valley clients.

Matthew graduated from the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) in Materials Science and Metallurgy as well as the EU-China Managers Exchange and Training Programme based at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

Matthew brings with him over half a decade of work experience at a well known firm of patent attorneys. His patent prosecution experience covered a wide range of technologies including general engineering, engines, pumps, materials, materials testing and bio-medical devices at the United Kingdom and European Patent Offices. Matthew has also advised on patent filing and maintenance strategies both worldwide and within Europe. He frequently conducts freedom to operate and infringement searches and has advised on post grant enforcement, opposition, invalidation and revocation issues.

Han Long

Han Long earned a Bachelor degree from the North China Electrical Power University in 2000 and received a Masters in Civil Jurisprudence from China University of Political Science and Law in 2004. He qualified as a China Attorney-at-Law in 2004 and as a China patent attorney in 2006.

Han Long worked for 4 years as an examiner at the Physics Department of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and thereafter practiced for 3 years both as a patent attorney and a lawyer at a leading law firm in Beijing, China.

His patent practice focused on patent prosecution in the area of mechanism, electrical engineering, telecommunication and computerization. He has extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications as well as in patent re-examination and invalidation. He has represented various enterprises before the courts handling patent litigation, including defending an Italian company in the textile field. He has also acted for plaintiffs collating evidence, and giving infringement analysis and opinions. Han Long is a member of the Chinese Bar and the All-China Patent Agents Association.

Edwin Chan
Patent Executive, Electrical Engineering

Edwin Chan holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, Canada.

Edwin has extensive experience in electronic engineering, particularly in MCU, Op Amp, Relay, Contactor, Infra-red and Altera MaxPlus II. He specialises in VLSI integration design, circuit timing analysis, deep sub-micron technology, VHDL and Verilog, as well as signal and communication systems including GSM, CDMS, TDMA, TDM, SONET and TCP/IP. Prior to joining ECHK he worked as a project officer focusing on Intellectual Property for the HK Government where he was responsible for patent application grants. He worked closely with the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), Government of HKSAR on Patent Application Grant (PAG) as well as the Innovation Technology Fund (ITF). He also participated in conducting an assessment process for the State Science & Technology Award with the ITC. He has acted as a supervisor in a number of well known IP projects, as well as engaged in detailed preparation of IP projects for the Government and the Innovation Technology Commission (ITC). He also worked as a biometrical researcher assessing the suitability and acceptability of new products in the Hong Kong, China and Macau markets at a renowned Information Technology company.

Emma Guo

Emma Guo received her Bachelor degree in Communications Engineering from Wuhan University, Department of Electronic Information in 2001. During her years at Wuhan University she was frequently awarded various scholarships and was amongst the top students. She is now following an extramural course in Law at the China University of Political Science and Law.

Emma was an examiner in the China Patent Office, examining applications for electrical and electronic inventions for 4 years, and then worked as a Patent Agent in an intellectual property firm in Beijing. She is familiar with advanced communication and electronic technology and patent application procedures in China.

Emma's working languages are English and Chinese.

Vincent Oey

Vincent Oey received his Bachelor's degree in Electronic and Communications Engineering and Master's degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 2003 and 2006 respectively. He currently focuses on prosecuting China patent applications and assisting in drafting original patent applications for Information and Communications Technologies, as well as electrical and mechanical innovations.

His experience in intellectual property matters also involves patentability searches, infringement searches, translation, and coordinating with associates to handle patent applications in various Asian countries.

Vincent has worked as an engineer with a global provider of semiconductor assembly, test and package design services.

His working languages are English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Dr. Fu Shulin
Patent Assistant

Dr. Fu Shulin earned a bachelor degree from the Northwest Sci-Tech University of Agriculture and Forestry, as well as a masters specializing in Vegetation. He also received a Ph.D in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the same university in 2007.

Dr. Fu Shulin worked for 7 years as a University teacher at the Northwest Sci-Tech University of Agriculture and Forestry and thereafter for 3 years as a researcher at the Institute of Beijing Biotechnology, Academy of Military Medical Science. He also practised for 1 year as a patent assistant at a well-known patent attorney firm in Beijing, where he focused on patent prosecution in the area of biochemistry, molecular biology, botany, microbiology and organic chemistry. He has extensive experience in writing and translating patent documents in the above fields. His working languages are English and Chinese (Mandarin).

Jacqueline Chan

Jacqueline Chan obtained her Bachelor of Laws from the University of London and Postgraduate Certificate in Laws from the University of Hong Kong in 2005. She has been a solicitor in Hong Kong since 2008. In addition, she also has a degree in Social Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Jacqueline has gained work experience in both the private and public sectors as she first joined a global marketing corporation as a copywriter and participated in advertising campaigns of various brands. She then worked as an examiner in the Intellectual Property Department of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, and subsequently joined a well-established Hong Kong law firm as a legal executive. She thereafter completed her traineeship as a lawyer in a general practice law firm where she gained experience in both civil and criminal matters.

Amy Lee
Solicitor, Hong Kong

Amy Lee earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of London in 2001 and Postgraduate Certificate in Laws from the University of Hong Kong in 2003. She has been a solicitor in Hong Kong since 2005.

Her experience in intellectual property matters includes 7 years in a prestigious law firm handling trademark and design prosecution in Hong Kong and elsewhere. Apart from intellectual property, Amy also received 2 years' legal training covering civil litigation, commercial and company secretarial, probate and administration and matrimonial practice.

Amy now focuses on trademark prosecution and enforcement in China, Hong Kong and Macau. She also advises on commercial aspects of IP, including company incorporation.

Jörg Sosna
Attorney, Germany

Jörg Sosna graduated from the University of Heidelberg (Germany) with a German law degree in 2000. He completed a Master's degree course on European Law at Leipzig University (Germany) in 2004. The following year he successfully passed the Second State Exam following a 2-year training program for lawyers run by the German Government which resulted in his being a fully-qualified German lawyer.

From 2000 to 2001 Jörg joined the intellectual property department of a multinational clothing manufacturer in Munich. His tasks centred on German and European trade mark law, so he was particularly involved in drafting license agreements and in proceedings with the German Patent and Trademark Office. Furthermore, he assisted in the management of the company's intellectual property assets.

In the latter part of 2001, Jörg joined the Italian law firm of Studio Legale Sutti based in Milan where he developed knowledge and expertise in Italian law, in particular in trademark law and unfair competition law. In addition, he assisted the partner and head of the IP department in preparing speeches on IP Due Diligence at IRI Institute in Milan in 2001, as well as lectures on this topic at the preparation course for the exam for Italian Trade Mark agents at Convey Institute in Milan in 2005.

During his Master of Law course, Jörg was a visiting scholar at the University of Padua (Italy) where he focused his studies on the conflict of laws, rounding up his ever growing interest in international aspects of law, leading to his Master thesis on European design law.

Jörg is a member of GRUR — Deutsche Vereinigung fur gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht e. V. (German Association of IP Professionals), and of the German Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.

He has worked in Germany, Italy and Hong Kong and his working languages are German, English, Italian and Spanish.

Joanna obtained a Juris Doctor degree from the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines and worked part-time as a Political Affairs Officer at the House of Representatives. After qualifying, she worked as a Senior Tax Associate at Sycip Gorres & Velayo, an Ernst &Young affiliate firm.

She thereafter studied and worked in the United States and has been admitted to practise in the State of New York. During her stay in the United States, she worked in the Trade Mark Department of a multi-national health and personal care products company.

Joanna specializes in the field of trade marks. She has worked in Hong Kong as a trade mark professional since 2006 during which time she was retained as Legal Consultant to the House Committee on Oversight of the Philippine House of Representatives.

Andy Yang

Andy Yang received his Masters in Law of Nations degree from the China University of Political Science and Law, after a Bachelor of Arts degree in foreign language from the Beijing Normal University.

In the past 10 years Andy was with major China firms specializing in IP matters. He has extensive experience in trade mark applications, infringements, oppositions, disputes and reviews. He has worked closely not only with China clients but also with many major international and multinational clients. Andy has handled over one hundred infringement cases, including criminal ones where the defendants were convicted. From 2001 to 2003, he was involved in campaigns against counterfeiters in Southern China, the value of which exceeded US$2.5 million. His patience and constructive attitude has made him successful in handling many sophisticated trademark dispute cases. He has represented various enterprises or individuals before CTMO and/or TRAB.

Cedric Yip

Cedric Yip received his Bachelor of Laws from Peking University in 2001 and his Honour Diploma in Laws and Business from Hong Kong Shue Yan College in 1995. He is a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Trade Mark Practitioners.

Cedric has more than 10 years' previous experience in different law firms prior to joining ELLA CHEONG (Hong Kong and Beijing) at the establishment of the firm. He specialises in intellectual property matters in Hong Kong and China.

His extensive working experience includes trade mark prosecution not only for Hong Kong and China but also throughout the Asian regions, as well as oppositions and enforcement.

In addition to trade mark matters, Cedric also handles patent and design prosecution in Hong Kong and China.

Ning Xue

Xue Ning obtained a Master of Laws Degree from the National University of Singapore in 2004 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the China University of Polictical Science and Law in the year of 2001.

Prior to joining Ella Cheong (Hong Kong and Beijing), Xue Ning worked at the Trade Mark and Design Department of Ella Cheong Spruson & Ferguson (ECSF), Singapore. At ECSF, Xue Ning participated in a wide range of intellectual property matters, concerning both Singaporean and international issues. Her working experience in intellectual property mainly includes drafting and prosecution of Singapore and international trade mark and design applications, trade mark oppositions, as well as infringement matters relating to the ASEAN regions. In addition, Xue Ning has 2 years' working experience in the field of International Economics Laws in China.
