I am an expert, author, speaker, and educator in matters related to occupational electrical injuries and fatalities.  As an expert witness, since 2005, I have been retained in more than 50 personal injury cases, with 60% for defendants and 40% for plaintiffs. Additional details on these cases are in my CV.

My areas of expertise span codes, standards, regulations, product and system design, safe practices, operational excellence, organization development, and human performance impacting the risk of electrical injury.

For over 35 years, I have challenged the status quo of electrical safety in the workplace. My work has advanced the application of human factors engineering, electrical technology and safety management systems in preventing occupational electrical injuries. From 1992 until 2015, I led the electrical safety competency for DuPont Global Operations and achieved sustainable breakthrough performance in electrical safety. I have authored or co-authored more than 70 published papers and articles, and received twelve prize paper awards from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). I have given more than 150 presentations at conferences, seminars and webcasts. In 1999, I received the IEEE Petroleum and Chemical Industry Electrical Safety Excellence Award, “for outstanding dedication and contributions made to advancing and accelerating the dispersion of information and knowledge impacting electrical safety”. In 2000, I was elected to Fellow in the IEEE, with the citation, “for contributions to improve workplace electrical safety”. In 2002, I was awarded the IEEE Richard Harold Kaufmann Technical Field Award, “for advancing the development and application of electrical safety technology, standards and work practices for industrial systems”. In 2004, I was co-recipient of the IEEE Medal for Engineering Excellence, with the citation, “for pioneering development of empirical models for predicting electric arc incident energy”. I have been active in IEEE technical committees since 1983. I am past president of the Industry Applications Society, past chair of the IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee, past chair of the IAS Power Systems Engineering Committee, past chair of IEEE Standard 902 Guide to Maintenance Operation and Safety of Industrial and Commercial Power Systems, past chair of the Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee Safety Subcommittee, and past editor of the Safety Column for IEEE Industry Applications Magazine. In 1991, I co-founded the IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop, an annual forum for accelerating application of improvements in electrical safety. I am a past member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Standards Association. I am a member of the National Fire Protection Association and represented the IEEE on the National Electrical Code Panel 1 from 1990 to 2015. I was a charter member of CSA Z462, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace Technical Committee. From 1996 to 2015, I served as a member of the Board of Directors of Electrical Safety Foundation International. In 2013, I joined the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), graduate school of Advanced Safety Engineering and Management (ASEM). At UAB, I teach Engineering Ethics & Acceptable Risk, and Electrical Systems Safety, which I developed for the ASEM program

I established Electrical Safety Group Inc in 2001 to provide expert consulting services in occupational electrical safety matters.

I am a licensed Professional Engineer, registered in Delaware, Michigan and Texas
